At Make-A-Wish, we regularly recruit board members, staff and volunteers. This section gives some tips on the recruitment process for all positions.

Make sure that the description of all positions mentions that the person is expected to adhere to our code of ethics and good conduct.

As an example in the position description:

We at Make-A-Wish adhere to our code of ethics and good conduct. As a member of the staff or as a volunteer, you will be expected to adhere and live out the values and expected behavior described in this code.

During the recruitment interview for any position, remember to include questions on ethics.

Examples of questions:

Describe a situation when you encountered unethical conduct, and how you responded to this.

Unethical conduct is not just about criminal actions; how would you define unethical conduct?

Or give examples of unethical conduct.

Induction for Newcomers

Remember to include Our values, ethics and good conduct as one of the sessions during the induction – see document #2 below.

1. Send the URL to the code and ask them to read this beforehand. ourcode.worldwishnetwork.com
2. At the session, walk through the code. Presenters: please see the presenters’ document below (document #3).
3. Topics for discussion for newcomers (board / staff / volunteers):

First think about behavior showing that you are living out the values of our code.

How would you show positive behavior:

• For the value of respect
• For the value of dialogue
• For the value of good governance
• For the value of accountability
• For the value of excellence

Then think about when you have encountered unethical situations. This can be from past experience in another organization.

The document with some dilemmas questions can be used as well, see downloadable document #4 below.

Ask: how do you feel about these situations, and what value would you think is the most relevant here?

Discuss with your colleagues.

Ask all newcomers to adhere to the code.

Many affiliates already use our standard conflict of interest and ethics statement. The new version incorporating the adherence to the code is downloadable below (document #5).

You can also set up your own online form for your affiliate, in the same manner as the last page in the International online code of ethics. If you are not sure how to do this, please contact the International office marketing team. Please do not ask your organization to sign on the International code of ethics document (this is for affiliates, represented by the chairs and CEOs).
